Guangdong has transformed its economic structure, shifting from traditional manufacturing to a more diversified and high-value-added economy. In 2024, the added value of industrial enterprises above the designated size increased by 4.2% year-on-year, contributing approximately 50% to Guangdong’s GDP growth. This reflects the province’s ongoing efforts in industrial upgrading and diversification.
Cities like Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Foshan have successfully moved up the value chain, focusing on advanced manufacturing, smart industries, and sustainable urban development. Moreover, Guangdong is advancing the integrated development of sci-tech innovation and industrial innovation, leading to significant technological achievements. GAC released its humanoid robot GoMate, which stands and moves on wheels, while Xpeng’s robot Iron will feature in-house developed chips.
High-End Innovation: Driving Technological Breakthroughs and Talent Attraction
Home to some of the world’s leading technology companies, such as Huawei, Tencent, and DJI, Guangdong has become a global innovation hub. The province’s high-end innovation is evident in its leadership in emerging industries such as 5G, new energy vehicles (NEVs), biotechnology, and semiconductor manufacturing. The new energy industry has become Guangdong's ninth trillion-level industrial cluster.
Guangdong’s innovation ecosystem is further strengthened by talent attraction. The latest initiative, "Million Talents to South China Plan," underscores the province’s commitment to attracting top-tier talent. These advantages and policies not only contribute to economic growth but also position China as a global leader in cutting-edge technologies.
High-Level Openness: Further Improving the Business Climate
As China’s gateway to the world, Guangdong is expanding high-level opening up by easing market access and improving the business climate. The province’s success in high-level openness is evident in its thriving free trade zones, robust foreign direct investment (FDI), and active participation in global supply chains.
The Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has further strengthened the province’s connectivity with the global economy. By fostering greater integration with Hong Kong and Macao, Guangdong has enhanced its financial services, logistics, and high-tech industries, making it a magnet for multinational companies and investors.
Through building a modern industrial system, fostering future industries, and enhancing global collaboration, Guangdong aims to be a dynamic and future-oriented economic powerhouse.
